The importance of colour in art

My interest in art began at an early age when I was introduced to 'The Impressionists' by my mother. I instantly fell in love with Monet's Giverny and fields of colour and Degas's ballet dancers. In turn, I then learnt about the Scottish Colourists and could see how they had drawn inspiration from the post Impressionist giants like Cezanne and Van Gogh. Emboldened by such creativity, the young Scots explored the frontiers of contemporary art through their cutting edge use of pure colour and line. For me, the great colourists of the modern day are currently Barbara Rae and Glen Scouller. They are my favourites and if I am lacking inspiration, I will look to them to help me engage in the colour process! I also find it helpful absorbing myself in fabric samples from Designers Guild, Osborne & Little and Manuel Canovas. Who inspires you?
